Việt Nam News reporters spoke to companies’ leaders to explore the effects and opportunities stemming from this new mandate on their respective businesses and society at large.

From January 1, 2024, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations mandate producers and importers of lubricants, batteries, accumulators and types and various packaging types to either recycle or pay fees to bolster waste recycling efforts. Việt Nam News reporters spoke to leaders from DUYTAN Recycling to explore the effects and opportunities stemming from this new mandate on their respective businesses and soeicty at large.

Sustainable solutions for waste management in Việt Nam

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) holds businesses responsible for handling and recycling waste arising from the production process. Expected outcomes of this policy include increased recycling rates and the establishment of a circular economy model in Việt Nam.

However, to successfully implement EPR policy in Việt Nam requires joint efforts from the Government, businesses and the community. There is a need to streamline regulations and raise awareness about the benefits of eco-friendly products and environmental protection for both present and future generations. Through these efforts, we can contribute to promoting the circular economy, working towards environmental protection and sustainable development.

Our network of more than 100 satellite collection stations, following a closed-loop from collection, sorting and bagging

DUYTAN Recycling has been prepared for EPR for a considerable period of time. The company is greatly honoured to be listed among the top 24 units capable of recycling packaging products, as announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on February 20, 2024, in Notice 86/TB-BTNMT. This signifies the company’s compliance with the recycling standards set by the ministry.

The main factor in successful waste recycling is investing in high technology that meets international standards. With synchronous and professional investment, DUYTAN Recycling always commits to product quality that meets international requirements and has full certifications such as EFSA, FDA. In 2023, we were honoured to receive the High-Tech Enterprise Certificate licensed by the Ministry of Science and Technology. We always operate for the goal of constantly investing in improving our recycling capacity, ensuring output and quality, meeting the demand for recycled plastic for domestic and foreign businesses.

Raising consumer awareness about waste classification at the source is an equally important factor. When consumers are knowledgeable about how to properly sort their waste into recyclables, organics and non-recyclables, it significantly reduces contamination and makes the recycling process more efficient. DUYTAN Recycling has co-operated in organising public awareness campaigns, educational programmes in schools and community workshops to promote responsible waste management habits. By providing consumers with knowledge and tools to classify waste correctly, we hope to increase recycling rates, contributing to reducing waste and protecting the environment in Việt Nam.
Coca-Cola with campaign “Our Bottles Can Live Many Lives” Corner, in partnership with DUYTAN Recycling, promoting a closed-loop production cycle for our plastic bottles.
However, we are currently facing challenges in the process as most waste in Việt Nam is not well classified at the source. Collection and recycling activities are still small and spontaneous, mainly carried out manually in craft villages, and do not comply with environmental regulations. Meanwhile, packaging is still not standardised and not designed for recycling.

To enhance the management, recycling and reduction of plastic waste that pollutes the environment and oceans, we have invested and built a factory providing high quality recycled plastic products with “Bottle-to-Bottle” technology. Each used plastic bottle will be recycled into plastic pellets, creating a new cycle, thereby helping to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Our factory is operated based on the THREE-NO criteria in the production process: Zero Waste – Zero Emission – Zero Waste Water. Applying these three criteria not only helps the company promote environmentally friendly production but also pays more attention to reusing energy sources in production.

We believe that the promotion of a circular economy in Việt Nam is a crucial objective in the company’s long-term development strategy. As a result, we have actively engaged in forums and seminars on the circular economy with the aim of sharing the company’s experiences and social initiatives with both domestic and international audiences. Through these sessions, DUYTAN Recycling aims to inspire and encourage more companies to join hands in the future to contribute to the establishment of a sustainable circular economy.

Green growth has become an inevitable trend and a vital condition for a sustainable future of a business. Deputy Editor-in-Chief Pham Van Truong of SGGP Newspaper shared that the organization board seriously collected opinions from relevant agencies and expert councils of several fields before building a standard set for the ‘HCMC Green Business’ title. Based on that set, a judge board consisting of scientists, experts, and representatives of competent authorities carefully reviewed and picked 90 most suitable companies for the title this year.

In the ceremony, HUBA President Nguyen Ngoc Hoa confirmed that all enterprises winning the title ‘HCMC Green Business 2023’ have made great efforts in implementing eco-friendly methods during their operation and production. They have strictly observed environmental regulations. They have joined hand with HCMC to create a greener working and living environment, contributing to the fight against global warming and climate change. Therefore, receiving the title is an honorable encouragement to their efforts as well as a passport for them to capture the heart of their customers and partners so that they can expand their market globally.

President Hoa also informed that along with awarding this title to selected businesses, HUBA and SGGP Newspaper are going to synchronously launch three solutions to help enterprises quickly resume their work after the pandemic and keep up with the green growth trend:

_Supporting businesses to learn about green technical barriers in order to build a suitable plan for manufacturing technology upgrade;

_Organizing promotion activities and green trade connections for businesses to expand their market;

_Developing and implementing a strategy to create a green brand name for businesses winning the title.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Phuoc, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) and member of the judge board, insisted that the board is going to include more updated green standards into the set year by year to guide businesses into following the global green growth trend and becoming more confident when entering international markets without being stopped by any green barriers.

The ‘HCMC Green Business’ title selection, assigned by the HCMC People’s Committee to HUBA, SGGP Newspaper and relevant state agencies to carry out, is one of many solutions adopted by HCMC to cope with climate change, reduce carbon emissions in manufacturing and trading activities, and help consumers become greener.

Launching annually, the ‘HCMC Green Business’ title aims at fulfilling the national goal of zero net emissions. Therefore, it is necessary to build practical selection standards, to apply serious and transparent selection methods, and to have a capable judge board that works scientifically. Only then can the title increase the prestige of winning enterprises in the city.

Meanwhile, the business community should promote a sense of responsibility and cooperate with the city in protecting the environment, create a healthy business place, and a livable city with sustainable development.

In the framework of the 4th HCMC Economy Forum 2023 (HEF 2023) and the award ceremony for ‘HCMC Green Business 2023’, the city held Green Growth Show 2023 (GRECO 2023) on Nguyen Hue pedestrian Street in District 1. The event takes place from September 13-17.
